Not too long ago I spoke to Peter and Helen, a South African couple who started the vineyard La Bodega del Garroferal in the Jalon Valley on the Costa Blanca. La Bodega Del Garroferal: A Vineyard in the Jalon Valley Go for it and keep in mind that you can always move back!Īlso Read: Why Moving Abroad is Such a Valuable Experience 2. Their story proves to me that there really is no excuse: do you want to start a new life abroad? Don’t let fear hold you back. And with The Coffee Box opening the Costa Blanca now finally has a place offering good quality coffee! That’s how The Coffee Box opened: a small coffee bar just meters from Calpe’s beautiful beach. They started looking for a new business to set up. That does not mean a person then stops dreaming though… Craig and Wendy got restless again. I’m sure it hasn’t always been easy and of course every business comes with its ups and downs, but they did do it: they decided to leave, they decided to follow their dream and they made it work. They completely renovated the farmhouse, added a swimming pool and eventually started their Bed & Breakfast. All we could see was the total beauty of its unique surroundings.” Its lack of easy access and no utility services did not present defects in our eyes. So, to make things even more challenging, we decided on a traditional, stone-built, mountain farmhouse that was badly in need of rescuing. Our love of country life meant that a simple house in a straight forward street was never going to satisfy our sense of adventure. For many reasons Spain came to the top of the list because of its location, climate, school choice, language, scenery and coast line. So we then had the task of deciding where to go. Despite a busy professional life as London Metropolitan Police officers as well as being “hands-on” parents for all hours off-duty, we still felt there was more to life and new adventures to experience.Ī move abroad, literally to expand all our horizons and the welcome promise of more sunshine, seemed to be the answer. ![]() We found ourselves annually pacing the beach on holidays abroad discussing what new challenges lay ahead. “Our love of the UK and a traditional family life with a house, two cars, two children and a dog still left us questioning what was missing. They found a place to live, a new school for the kids and work for themselves. I could have picked many success stories and probably greater successes, but the business and life Craig and Wendy have created for themselves to me proves that the dream of packing up everything and starting a new life abroad is very possible no matter what stage of your life you are in.Ĭraig and Wendy moved to Spain 11 years ago with their two kids. Not knowing the local language, local customs and the level of bureaucracy you will have to deal with can make your start-up fail very quickly. But setting up a business in a foreign country adds a few extra difficulties. In any country setting up your own business is a challenge. And that’s why, ever since I first moved to Spain 15+ years ago, I’ve seen many foreign entrepreneurs come and go…

I think the chances of a thief or someone who might have ill intentions taking advantage of these types of exploits in your home is pretty rare. I am assuming this is for security concerns. When I linked MyQ with Google Assistant originally using their partner subscriptions ($10/year), it did not support opening or closing the garage door (just status which is ridiculous when you think about it). ![]() I definitely don’t want WiFi and Alexa seems to have all sorts of issues with wifi devices dropping in and out. I’d like to be able to get this on my Devices list for both SmartThings and Amazon. Both are controlled by two-wire buttons next to my interior door. If you find that your door opener is not connecting to the famous smartThings, you can integrate the two by following a few steps, and all will work as you wish. I have a house with two garage doors controlled by a Genie and a Chamberlain. Many developers have deliberately not included automatically opening/unlocking doors in their feature set with smart assistants. Most MyQ garage door openers are supported by the smartThings app and can be easily connected. You can now use Google Assistant routines and shortcuts to say, “Open/Close Garage door.” This will propagate on all accounts that share Google Home Mini’s in your home.īe aware that this may be a security concern for you to consider. ![]() Since I wanted the distance sensor to be able to report back the state of the door without being polled I also had to write a SmartApp which allowed the Photon to update SmartThings via an API endpoint in the SmartApp.Sorry, old post, but I couldn’t resist. ST requires a connected switch to operate a garage door opener. This required writing a device type for the Particle Photon that defined the API calls in the Particle Cloud service as well as allowing me to easy put my API credentials in. This was inspired specifically by the GoControl/Linear Garage Door (GD00Z-4) which is a great garage door opened available on Amazon but has a compatibility issue with SmartThings Door/Locks section. Once I had the physical control working via the Particle API the integration with SmartThings was next. I just had to establish rough range values by reading it and holding my hand at various distances to figure out a good threshold to consider that it was the door in the way of the sensor and not someone standing below it or a car in the garage. A couple years and about 120 devices later I set up the Something Left Open smart app on the old app and it carried forward when I migrated to the new. The sensor is analog so was very easy to read on the Photon. I started here as well, needed something to tell me the kids left the garage door open at sunset because I was tired of it being left open all night. It was unlikely anything else would get in the way to present a false reading as well given the range of the sensor. This meant that when the door was closed the IR distance sensor would not detect it but when opened it would reflect the beam and indicate the door was present. I was able to find and publish for myself the Garage Door Monitor SmartApp and get the notifications working in the app. I already had a spare IR distance sensor on hand from a different project so I mounted this to the ceiling pointing down above where the door was while open. SmartThings lets you automate your home so your mornings are easier and your nights are calmer. A home that works on your schedule Now your home can keep up with your busy schedule. Discover how a single app can drastically enhance your lifestyle. I also wanted to be able to reliably detect the state of the door which required some sort of sensor. SmartThings is a powerful remote control for your home. These are great and at $19 USD they are well worth the ease of use over something like an cheaper ESP8266. I chose the Particle Photon as the microcontroller as it let me use Arduino libraries but gave me a quick way to get an API end point on the internet without any fuss. Since this is a higher voltage than a micro controller can handle on its own using a relay was necessary. Moving the door is as simple as just connecting the two terminals together just like the wall switch does. Being able to see when the door is left open by accident is a plus as well. I wanted to keep my existing opener and switches while adding the ability to control it automatically and remotely. There are multiple off the shelf products for this but they all are fairly expensive for what they do and some work better than others. I’ve been integrating multiple parts of my home lately with SmartThings and wanted to get my garage door opener attached as well. ![]() ![]() Games are fun and engaging, and children often do not realize how much they are learning when they are having fun playing a game with a friend or family member. Do you still think using structs is a good approach for that? Please ask me for clarifications if necessary.Suppose that C is a cell array with shape M × 1 (i.e., size(C) returns ), and that each element of C is in turn a cell array with shape 1 × N. My implementation sounds complicated but what I really do is quite simple. After that, I need to search the profile struct (timestep_struct(t).profile=profile ), search within every array of that, to find an id (remember we have arrays of Mx3 where the first column is id and the second is a number to be reduced) in other timesteps other than t, and reduce their number by 1. So,zero positions in the cell array have been reduced by one and the position marked as 1 will be no longer be used. When i find the coordinates that give me maximum util, I set that position in the cell array to 1. ![]() For each zero position I find the corresponding value from the struct and perform the black box operation. ![]() The way I am doing all this now, is by initializing a cell array having the dimensions of timestep_struct with zero at each position. Function printTrajectory 5 The function printTrajectory (lines 9-16) takes an input argument Traj, a cell array containing the trajectory information. And if I want to replace a value of an array, i mean, in this case B 3 2 1 0, and C should find the values that match from A, A variates between 3 and 0 like randi function, so how D can use cellfun for search in A the values that match and replace with another values. Then, i will run the same operation again to find the next best configuration. One of this timestep_struct(i).coordinates(j,:) will give me the maximum utility after the processing. Say t can take values from 1 to 120, and each coordinates matrix may have from 1 to 100 rows (each matrix can have different number of rows). For extracting subsets of cells you need to use round parentheses. Basically, the purpose of curly braces is to retrieve the underlying content of cells and present a different behavior. Best would be to leave it as a numeric array. When i try to multiply these arrays like this H.X i get the following error: Undefinedoperator. You have to use round parentheses indexing instead of curly braces indexing, like this: data (:,1) Output: ans 3×1 cell array first second third. ![]() This will be used in let's say black box operation.
